What is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. ADHD is conceptualized through a specific set of functional difficulties within the brain's neural networks. ADHD is the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral product of interaction of neocortical and subcortical (basal ganglia/cerebellum) processes. It is essentially a Disorder of Cognitive Control.

What are the signs & symptoms of ADHD?

It's important to remember there are different manifestations of ADHD, no two cases look quite the same but the disorder has some common components. Some signs & symptoms of ADHD may include:

  • Low capacity to optimize behavior, thinking, attention, and emotional experience/expression
  • Struggling to control emotional responses
  • Impulsivity including struggling to wait one's turn or interrupting others
  • Fidgeting or excessive movements
  • Inattention
  • Easily distracted by stimuli in environment
  • Missing details or making careless mistakes
